Julia, a Novel - Sandra Newman

 

I've enjoyed a couple of novels like this - a famous story told from a different point of view. I think my favorite was one I read decades ago that was Dracula's point of view of his tale, which actually made a lot of sense. James that I reviewed recently is another one that I quite enjoyed and actually thought that it improved the original.

It has been decades since I have read 1984 and so it is difficult to compare details between this new book and the original, but the basic story is the same, naturally. But, besides being told from the woman's outlook, there does not seem to be a lot of variations in this novel - nothing major that stands out, in any case.

That doesn't diminish the writing or the concept, as the writing especially is very well done, but other than embellishing the character (which is to be expected coming from her impression), there is not much variation that I noticed between this story and the original.

A fine read, and those who are more familiar with the original may get more from this, but still worth checking out regardless.
