Nikki Ruffing's B-day Celebration with MMM, Water Landing, the Legendary Boilermakers & The Psyatics

Our friend Nikki decided to throw a birthday bash at the Double Down Saloon with some of her favorite bands, and Melanie and the Midnite Marauders were privileged to be counted among them. We opened the night to an enthusiastic crowd who danced'n'hollared'n'drank along with us. Even Nikki got up to dance, play drums and steal some of our drummer, Clay's, chips'n'sandwich that he ate during our set (his floor tom makes a fine snack'n'drink table since he doesn't need to play it).

From there, we got Water Landing, serving up an aviation-themed set of tunes ranging from funky, one-chord jams, to their upbeat theme song to plenty more filled with Ron's drivin' drums, Eric, Jules and Ron's harmonies and Daniel's rolling bass lines. Keyboardist Jules sang a couple, including a stompin' version of "These Boots Are Made For Walking" and birthday gal Nikki played mandolin and percussion for several songs, including a Violent Femmes cover and their own Jayne County-ish "Alcohol"

Oddly, I had never seen the Legendary Boilermakers before, despite drummer Jomar having played with me in the Tommyknockers many moons ago. The Boilermakers are a smokin' three piece that combines rockabilly, surf, psychobilly, the Cramps and whatever else comes into their heads into a potent, groovy brew. Singer/guitarist Dave was having a serious throat issue so bassist Chad and Jomat sang most of the set, including some surf numbers, "Lonesome Train", "Human Fly" and, from Jomar's ex-band, the Mad Daddies, the classic "Porno King". Oh yeah, Dave and Chad traded instruments at one point, as well! Great rockin' set!

Unfortunately, the day caught up with us and we couldn't stay for our pals, the Psyatics, although they have always done a great job. Hope to see everyone again soon! Happy birthday Nikki!
