The Boys Volume One - The Name of the Game
This volume compiles the first six issues of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson's The Boys, which many might know from the popular TV series that was based on this. In fact, the series follows the comic pretty faithfully, which is a nice change of pace (wish that Preacher had done that!).
The plot revolves around Butcher and his group of "Boys" (even though one is a woman) whose mission is to take down the superheroes that are becoming all too prevalent in their timeline and who do not care much for "ordinary" human lives, as is evidenced right from the start of the story in a brutal fashion. Butcher has a very personal reason for his hatred, as does his new recruit, and the "heroes" prove that there are plenty of good reasons for taking them down. These first six episodes are basically introductions to all of the main characters on both sides.
I think the first book I read with more flawed and humanized supes was The Watchmen and this follows in that tradition, but with more gore and way more over the top. Fun, sick stuff!
