Dolemite is My Name

While I am somewhat familiar with Rudy Ray Moore/Dolemite and have seen at least one of his movies, I am by no means an expert on the man or his life. Eddie Murphy's characterization of Moore in this film rings reasonably true and it probably doesn't matter if some of it is not real, as it is all part of the Dolemite legend.

Taking the Dolemite persona from the rhyming tales of a local homeless man, Moore built upon the mythology, put his own spin on it all, and made his career on it. Mixing music with his pre-rap boasting, he became a well-known stand up comedian, released best-selling records (according to the legend, he self-released first) and then went into (ultra low-budget, but popular) films.

Murphy and the star-studded cast does a great job portraying the story and only occasionally gets a little sappy. Again, I'm not sure how true-to-life this is, but it is a fun romp through early blaxploitation.

Hank Williams The Biography by Colin Escott

Co-written with George Merritt and William MacEwen, Escott does his best to present a thorough bio of one of country's biggest stars. Of course, the early days are always the toughest when it comes to poor folks born in the "old days" (1923 in Hank's case) where there weren't always the best record keeping and you had to rely on people's fading memories. With health issues, an absentee father, a domineering mother and an early start at a drinking problem that would eventually be his demise, Williams was not one who most people would bet on becoming a star. In fact, he had difficulties keeping musicians in his band as most of them looked down on his music, thinking it was too simple and too hillbilly - which is exactly what most people liked, and still like, about it.

But Hank drew crowds and garnered radio shows almost from the star of his career, even though the career had starts'n'stops due to his drinking and his bad luck. When he finally did start record in 1947, the records were hits, even with inferior recording'n' pressing quality. No one in "the biz" could understand why - not the record company, the promoters, the radio stations or his sidemen, but the people knew and his fame continued to grow. Even when he did eventually sign with a new major record company - MGM Records, a division of the film mogul - the producers continued to misunderstand his audience and brought in studio musicians who did not comprehend his style and tried to change and urbanize it. It was only when Hank's work stood on its own, with (more or less) Hank's direction and his band's simple backing, that the hits really started coming.

One of my favorite parts of the book is that Escott details the recording sessions with who played on what songs and who was producing, as well as where the songs originated (covers, something that Hank wrote or co-wrote, or something that Hank bought), giving a better insight to Hank's work and how much was him (the best work) and how much was someone else.

Of course, with his hits came fame, a spot on the Grand Ol' Opry, and big crowds. But, with chronic pain issues, relationship problems, increased show commitments and the need to continually come up with more hits, the pressure grew as did his drinking and eventual prescription drug use. His inconsistency - he often could not play shows at all due to his inebriated state - led to he expulsion from the Opry and smaller shows. When he did finally succumb, in the back seat of his car on the way to a show, he left behind 2 wives, a pregnant girlfriend, a quarreling family and several recently recorded songs that would eventually become his best known work and biggest hits.

It's a sad tale of wasted talent, but it is well told and nicely detailed, giving more than one point of view when memories conflict, and not really siding with any one person - although Escott's opinion of Hank's first wife, Audrey, and her questionable talent is pretty scathing. BUt, overall, well done and a fascinating read.

The Peculiar Pretzelmen and the Swamp Gospel at the Huntridge Tavern, Thursday Oct 17, 2019

I've ranted'n'raved about the PP ever since I first heard them several years back (thanks to Clay Heximer!) and I see them and try to play shows with them every time they come through town. Thursday nights can be tough, but the Swamp Gospel made it out to open up for them this evening with an somewhat under-rehearsed set (real life has been interfering lately) of our soul sanctifying songs of salvation. We seemed to have won over a few new recruits to the congregation and did our best to energize the folks that came out early

The Pretzelmen, despite being a duo, have quite a bit of equipment and took a little time to set up, but that served them well as quite a number of folks showed up late and stayed through the night, so they had a good crowd for their set. These two cats are truly one of my favorite combos working these days and they are always a pleasure to witness. Deacon's crazed drum kit consists of pie tins, bike parts, chains, various percussion instruments, and seemingly items found on the side of the road. Kevin plays a variety of homemade stringed contraptions that emulate ukuleles and banjos, as well as a mutated guitar, a somewhat standard banjo and a mandocello - the only one I have ever seen live. The songs are sorta late-Tom Waits-ian, but through their own unique filters, with lots of effected noise backing the melodies. I love their records, but they need to be seen live, where everything is stripped down but still sounds full and are a little more crazed'n'volatile and, of course, the visual fever'n'frenzy is joyous to behold.

They are currently touring the west coast - make sure you see them if you can!

Cream Strange Brew by Chris Welch

Melody Maker writer Chris Welch was a young man in the right place at the right time when he joined the ranks of writers for MM just as the scene was moving from "trad jazz" (which he also enjoyed) to the younger and more exciting "Rhythm'n'Blues". He would report on these hip new groups while still keeping an eye out for the remnants of the old guard and the new musicians who moved from one scene to the other. He watched as Ginger, Eric and Jack evolved from sidemen to stars in the supergroup (a term he claims to have coined) Cream, who he literally watched from beginning practices (Ginger called him to tell him about the formation before everyone had even officially quit their previous combos!) to their final shows.

Starting out as more of a jazz man, Ginger Baker originally taught himself how to play drums but then studied to the point of learning to read music in order to get gigs. Sitting in and touring with innumerable combos - including backing Sister Rosetta Tharpe! - he eventually joined Alexis Korner's group along with Jack Bruce and Graham Bond until the three of them formed the Graham Bond Organization. Jack Bruce had also been a young bass virtuoso (starting out on cello because he wasn't big enough to handle a stand up bass!) with a fantastic singing voice and had been making money gigging in various combos since his mid-teens. Eric Clapton studied a variety of guitar off'n'on and played in a few relatively nondescript projects before settling into the Yardbirds as they were taking off. All three were dissatisfied with their current projects and decided to try something new together.

The band started with basic blues covers but soon were writing - with the help of Pete Brown - more psychedelic and poetic verses like their odd debut, "Wrapping Paper". Pete is interviewed fairly extensively here, which is nice, as he did contribute quite a bit to their success by writing the words for their biggest hits.

Their success was comparatively slow, though, especially in Britain, where they played smaller venues for most of their career. After an initial American sojourn in which they played a package Murray the K showcase, they rose to larger and more prestigious rooms, with the Coasts being particularly kind with the help of Bill Graham and his Fillmores. But despite the successes - larger shows, more audience response, platinum record sales - discontentment set in, especially with Eric, and the ultimate split came after one last American tour and their Goodbye album.

There is not a lot of detail in here but it is a good overview of the group and their career by someone who was intimately involved with the chaps through these years. The book is a large format packed with high quality, color photos. Nice job, overall!

Superstar in a Housedress: The Life and Legend of Jackie Curtis by Craig Highberger

Jackie Curtis was, of course, one of Andy Warhol's Superstars (starring in Flesh and Women in Revolt), but also an actor, singer, playwright, author, poet and much more in his own right. While known for his outrageous drag persona - more flamboyant and over-the-top than especially feminine - Jackie also wrote and directed (and starred in) numerous plays and did acting work as a male - he truly wanted to be accepted as a "real" actor.

Born in New York City, Jackie leaned towards the wild side early on and became one of the legends of the city - he is a star of Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" along with his drag queen cohorts Holly Woodlawn and Candy Darling, among others. The late 60's and 70's were made for these larger-than-life creations and Curtis was able to survive (to some extent) simply by being a "star".

Jackie sounds like he was lovable but painfully difficult, as many of the NYC stars were at the time - charismatic but leeching as well as self-destructive and somewhat insensitive. But, he worked hard at his craft and even moved to Hollywood at one point with the hopes of breaking into films with his boyish James Dean-ian looks. He could never quite grasp the golden ring though and, back in New York, his drug use became abuse and escalated into heroin, which became the cause of his death.

As with many from this time, his story is fun'n'fabulous and at the same time sad and his death is a cruel, all-too-early waste of his life. Highberger met Jackie in the early 70's and videotaped him throughout his life and his documentary on Jackie is included as a bonus with this book. The book itself is drawn from many interviews and reminiscences from Jackie's friends and family, and is basically a transcript of the documentary. This is a well-done story of an iconic life.

RIP Ginger Baker

Cream drummer Ginger Baker dies at 80
 ---
After "Sunshine of Your Love" hit, this band introduced so many to the original blues artists - an invaluable service - and to jazz-like virtuoso playing from every member of the band. Ginger's playing was based on jazz - his initial love - and helped to change how the rock world saw percussionists.
