The Ministry For the Future - Kim Stanley Robinson

I think the tagline on the cover ("The best science fiction nonfiction novel") is quite accurate in this case. A tale of climate change disasters that are ignored until past the time of no return, and finally some people - not all, by any means - start to take it seriously enough to attempt some global rescues, even as some fight these efforts to the death. It's literally a story that we are living through every day, with certain details changed in order to call it fiction.

In this account, after a catastrophic heat wave in India that killed tens of thousands, some people realized that the current inaction was not working and started to take matters in their own hands. India as a country took some measures to cool its land while individuals banded together to use what may be referred to as terrorist activities to make their point, although they initially avoided taking lives. This reluctance changed when they saw that they needed more extreme measures, but continued to do their best to avoid "collateral damage". Many others continued to work on the problem in more "legitimate" venues, from research scientists to the group the book is named after - The Ministry For the Future, whose purview is to look after future generations. Among others, we follow the leader of this Ministry as she encounters those who have been personally affected and discovers that there is a black ops team in her group that she was unaware of.

The narration follows different people and groups as they react to this new world where some change is actually enacted, mainly due to the Children of Kali, who crash planes and destroy boats, kidnap the wealthy and think outside the box. Change does occur but it comes slowly, and seemingly too slow to stop the inevitable. In the end, after years and years, things do improve, but there is always more to be done, even after radical steps have been taken.

I appreciate that Robinson has different perspectives and comes up with - or has read about others' ideas for - steps that can be taken, and either he or his sources seem to have quite a bit of scientific knowledge that covers many different areas. I am afraid, though, that our real world will not take the steps necessary to make any real change, since the world is seeing incredibly violent climate events already that are met with a overall yawn, and if we had real-life climate terrorists, I'm afraid that the powers-that-be would fight them rather than the true sources of the problems.

So, somewhat simultaneously hopeful and depressing, and the next generations will see and judge us for what we do and don't do to tackle this very real issue. Sobering but well written.

The Peculiar Pretzelmen, The Unwieldies, the Devil's Duo at the Dive Bar, Wednesday, Oct 26, 2022

So when our pals, the Peculiar Pretzelmen, told us they were touring and were interested in coming to Vegas, of course we did all we could to get them here! Since they specifically asked for a place with a real stage'n'PA System (as opposed to some of the super fun, but not super sonically outfitted shows that we've done together in the past in town), I hit up Nate at the Dive Bar, who had ironically just upgraded their system. Since Nate'n'Angie are musically open minded and have a wide variety of acts at the Dive, I thought that they would go for this one and thankfully, they did!

The Devil's Duo opened the night, as we do, with our acoustic guitar/banjolele renditions of murder ballads, old Americana and random Tom Waits/Velvet Underground/Nick Cave covers, as well as brand new tunes we just learned that we pilfered from the Gentlemen of Four Outs songlist - "Even the Devil Gets Right Some Day" and "Somebody Buy Me a Drink". Since it was a few days before Halloween, we donned some spooky makeup to get into the season.

Of course, I've ranted'n'raved about the Unwieldies untold times on this blog, and they never fail to impress with their take on alt-country/Americana acoustic tunes. Rob'n'Dani got into the samhain spirit by dressing as Jaws and the Captain! Jack'n'Richard declined to join in, but their violin'n'dobro certainly added musical layers to their tunes of love'n'loss. Always a good time with great original songs and wacky covers like "Billy Jean"!

Of course, the Pretzelemen always put on a fantastic show, with walls of sound emanating from these two gentlemen and their wide array of musical tricks. Deacon's drum kit has more bicycle'n'auto parts than it has drums, and he has weird little other additions off to the side that added to the cacophony via an old school speaker horn mounted in the middle of the stage. Kevin plays a wide variety of homemade/altered instruments and recently acquired a new mandocello - to replace the 1948 hollow body that he used to bring out. His pedal board is as much a part of the performance as anything else and there are echoes'n'waves of sounds bombarding the audience throughout the night. Their style is certainly Tom Waits-ian, but their songs are highly original, as well, and they continue to grow and evolve within their self-proclaimed boundaries.

Great to see the band play live again and nice to be able to spend a little time hanging out with the guys, as well. Picked up some new t-shirts, as well as their latest CD, so more on that later!

Once again, a huge thanks to Nate, Angie and Josh at the Dive Bar for hosting the night and giving the scene another happenin' place to play!

RIP The Killer

Jerry Lee Lewis, rock ’n’ roll pioneer who sang ‘Great Balls of Fire,’ dies at 87

Absolutely one of the best and one of the first rock'n'rollers ever - and a fantastic country singer/musician as well. Sad to see this living legend go.

Kid Congo book reading and signing at Writer's Block Bookstore, Saturday Oct 22, 2022

While I can't claim that I was ever close with Mr. Powers back in the day, I was always a fan of his work and we always struck up a cordial conversation whenever we would see each other, whether playing together or just ending up at the same show. Always friendly and personable, he is still a damn nice guy to this day and remains outgoing and sweet to his friends'n'fans alike.

I've had his book on my wish list for a while now, but when I saw that he was coming to Vegas for a reading (quite a shocker as Vegas rarely gets events like these), I decided to pick one up and have it signed while he was here. Luckily, we got there early enough as the event was jam packed (standing room only) and the books sold out well before he started.

The Writer's Block folks were well organized and pleasant, prompt and grateful for the attention, I believe. The owner (I'm sorry - I did not write down his name) made the introduction and Kid gave a little opening monologue before doing several readings from the book, including meeting Jeffrey Lee Pierce for the first time, giving his first blow job, and getting arrested for shoplifting with other LA punk scene luminaries (of course, they weren't luminaries back then, they were simply the handful of punks that existed in LA). From these excerpts it seems that Kid is actually a fine writer, clever'n'witty, with a good sense of pacing'n'storytelling - I look forward to having the time to delve into the book. Local writer Lissa Townsend Rodgers came on to moderate a question'n'answer session as well as asking a few poignant inquiries herself.

Afterwards, we lined up and Kid was gracious enough to sign everything that everyone brought - be it books, records, posters and more - and made time to greet everyone and take pix with everyone.

A well organized event that went extremely smoothly other than selling out of the books, but obviously, that's always a guessing game. Kudos to Writer's Block for hosting and thanks again to Kid for returning to Vegas! Here's hoping that at least one of his bands returns soon!

Kepi Ghoulie and Friends with the Psyatics at Red Dwarf, Thursday 10-20-22

Of course, any time Kepi comes to town is an event that everyone should attend so when we found out that he was returning to Vegas (great to see him playing acoustic a few months ago) with a super-star electric band featuring B-Face (Queers, Nobodys, Groovie Ghoulies and many others) and Atom Bomb (also many assemblages), we had to figure out some way to be part of it and seeing that it was an electric night, The Psyatics were able to jump on the bill. Despite a last minute venue change, there was a terrific turnout of rabid Ghoulie fans!

With three hours to fill and considering Kepi's songs average a minute or two, the Psyatics pulled out an hour-ish long set filled with songs from the various albums, some wacky covers (including the Banana Splits' "Gonna Find Me a Cave" - fitting for cartoon Saturday mornings shared with the Groovie Ghoulies back in the day) and a few brand new tunes from our upcoming album, to be released in 2023. As usual, Jack and I managed to take over a good portion of the floor space and good-naturedly terrorized the audience and staff alike. Fun times!

For this tour, Kepi and company are playing the entirety of the Groovie Ghoulies' Fun in the Dark album, which is fitting as B-Face was part of the band at the time of that recording. Considering that this record is less than a half hour, they had extra time to fill, so they did two sets, finishing out the first set with a number of audience requests - including the ever-popular "Beast With Five Hands". Plenty more requests for the second set (after an intermission for selling merch) including Melanie's fave, their cover of Chuck Berry's "All Aboard", amongst many others.

Plenty of smiles, lots of laughs, some slam-dancing, tons of hugs and a good time was had by all. Hopefully Kepi and co. will continue to come out regularly for these Vegas excursions!
