The All Togethers, Melanie and the Midnite Marauders and the Gentlemen of Four Outs at the Pioneer Saloon, Saturday Sept. 26, 2015

A number of friends/bands made the road trip out to the Pioneer Saloon in order to celebrate our friend, Nikki Ruffling's birthday. While the Pioneer had some issues this evening that cut into the festivities, still, there was plenty of great music and fun festivities.

The All Togethers was the band that was "officially" scheduled to perform for the evening and they started things off in a fine fashion with their terrific take on "hillbilly jazz". The band now includes Brandon Madejek, the talented singer/guitarist behind the recently departed Whiskey Breath, and he is a fine addition, indeed, adding his superior vocals as well as guitar to the tune.

As usual, there were some more recent numbers that I was not familiar with, plenty of their superior originals and a cover of "Folsum Prison Blues" with Brandon & Ken trading lead vocals (as Whiskey Breath used to cover it, as well) and "Baba O'Riley" with Ken doing keyboard parts on his banjo and the lovely ladies doing choreographed moves. Super fun, as always!

The debut of the new high-energy honky-tonkin' combo, Melanie and the Midnite Marauders (again, featuring me and my lovely wife, Melanie, along with husband'n'wife rhythm section, Clay and Denise Heximer) followed, as we did a quick set of Loretta Lynn, Ernest Tubb, Dave Edmunds and more. Everyone, including the group, seemed to enjoy themselves on this one!

Then, things kinda all went screwy, but eventually the All Togethers got to do another, abbreviated set followed by another long break and then the Gentlemen of Four Outs managed to get in about 20 minutes worth of tunes. People were clappin', dancin' and singin' along, until we got shut down.

It's too bad that the Pioneer let things kinda go to heck for the crowd that came to see the bands and for the groups themselves since this could have been a truly wild party night. As it was, there was lots of fun to be had, but, too many long breaks that annoyed everyone.

In any case, we all wish our friend Nikki a happy birthday celebration!

Country - Nick Tosches

Y'know, I don't know what I was expecting from this book, but I was not knocked out by it, unfortunately. Tosches has an interesting style of writing, with some vague non sequitur passages and chapters (sorta/kinda tells a story without telling us who the subject is), and some bits of wildness, but overall, this was not super informative.

That is not to say that it was without merit - he definitely had me running to You Tube to hear some folks and I put a few items on my Amazon wish list due to this tome, but somehow it just didn't flow for me.

But, that said, there is a good history of country and Americana music and its roots - sometimes a little too much history for my tastes (he goes into several centuries of influences on some tunes) - and some sweet anecdotes about lots of characters that have created the sounds we now think of as country and country&western. Of course, there is a good chunk of pages dedicated to the fabulous Jerry Lee Lewis (who Tosches wrote an entire book about), as well as lesser knowns, such as Emmett Millers, who influenced everyone from Hank Williams to Jerry Lee himself.

There are also chapters dedicated to lewdness in C&W, the overlapping of blues/C&W/pop/etc., the record business itself and plenty more. So, there is a lot to absorb here and plenty of interest, so worth checking out, but not highly recommended.

Keith Richards - Under the Influence (Netflix Documentary)

This is a fun, new doc, originating due to Keith's new solo album (Crosseyed Heart) where film maker Morgan Neville gets Keith to simply chat about basically everything - the new record, the way he likes to record, his dedication to the Stones, his autobiography, and especially his immense love of music of all sorts - blues, of course, but also country and reggae and more. There is some very cool older footage of Keith with the Stones, Keith in Jamaica, with Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, filming and playing with Chuck Berry and plenty extra.

I have not heard the new record at this time - and I'm not sure if I would like all of it and it seems to jump all over the place, which isn't unusual for someone who likes so much different music - but his band is pretty smokin' in the footage here - guitarist Waddy Wachtel is particularly tasteful is his Stonesy playing. Keith does show off some fine finger-pickin' and piano playin' but seems to be concentrating on rhythm more than leads, not that he likes to distinguish such things as much as some of us do.

In any case, this is entertaining and shows Keith is a relaxed situation and truly highlights his love for music and the fact that he is certainly not yet ready to retire, despite admitting that he has thought about it. Absolutely worth checking out!

RIP Lady Bo

Sad to report the passing of Peggy Jones aka Lady Bo, the sexy, sassy and super talented guitarist who played with the man, Bo Diddley in the late 50's/early 60's. She was 76.

Here is an article with more details.

We're Loud: 90's Cssette Punk Unknowns Release Party!

Not having lived in Las Vegas in the 1990's (we got here in 2003 and didn't really become party of the "scene" until a number of years later), I was not familiar with Jaime Paul Lamb or any of his many groups that he fronted or participated in during that time. In fact, I really found out about this show due to the fact that the Swamp Gospel drummer Lenny Ribaudo was going to be playing drums for a Dirty Babies semi-reunion (minus guitarist Kei, who is living in the mid-west now). But, I'm glad that I did find out, as it was a wild'n'fun bit of tasteless garage madness!

I will not even attempt to list everyone involved or all of the bands that were somehow represented here, but Jaime played and sang throughout - sometimes lead vox, sometimes backing, often on his Farfisa organ - giving the proceedings a cool, garage feel - sometimes on guitar. Numerous others came and went from the stage, many that I did not know - apparently a number of people have moved away from Vegas over the ensuing years. In fact, I think that our pal Jonoboe (who did a terrific job on bass) and Lenny were the only two that I knew.

As I said, a lot of different bands were represented, with names like the Barf Bags, the Drop Outs, the Oblong Boxers, the Fucking Pigs, the Heck Yas, Le Fleur de Mal, the Van Buren Wheels and, of course, the afore-mentioned Dirty Babies. Everything was generally high-energy garage rock with tasteless/goofy lyrics and titles like "Rip Your Cunt", "You're Gonna Die", "I'm a Sissy", "Community Cunt", "Pink Fingers", "I'm a Date Rapist", "Jenny Was a Christian", "I'm Better Than You", "Sweet, Sweet Satan", etc. Of course, it was great for me to finally be able to simply watch Lenny smash'n'bash'n'crash his drums to tunes like "Up All Night" and the finale of the ubiquitous garage cover "You're Gonna Miss Me".

I think the only complaint anyone had was that things didn't go on longer, but it seems like the gang covered all of the material that they had planned, and then some! Great show of totally fun'n'crazed rock'n'roll. I did pick up the double-LP compilation, so more on that when I have some time!

I will not attempt to identify all of the culprits here, but I took tons of pix:

Clarence Gatemouth Brown - Dirty Work at the Crossroads 1947-1953

I've been looking for a good compilation of this gentlemen's early work for quite a while and finally
found this great one - love this man's guitar blues from this era!

While Clarence was (he died in 2005) an accomplished musician on numerous instruments - he loved country music and played fiddle from a young age, along with mandolin, viola, harmonica and drums. But his bluesy guitar playing is mighty exceptional and here he shows his love for performers who came before him, such as Louis Jordan and especially T-Bone Walker, which his style emulates to some extent (just listen to "Didn't Reach My Goal").

Everything on this disc is pretty darn stellar, and it includes his hits, such as "Okie Dokie Stomp", "My Time is Expensive", "Boogie Rambler". "Just Before Dawn" and the title cut (exceptional singing and playing on this one!).

The sound is based around the combination of horns'n'guitar - there's frantic instrumental jumpers like "Atomic Energy" and "Boogie Uproar", cool guitar/sax trade-offs in"Mary is Fine", slow blues in "Two O'Clock in the Morning" and the sizzlin' "Win With Me Baby", r'n'b ravers like "I Live My LIfe" and some damn terrific guitar playing throughout!

Really a superior comp - a new fave acquisition!

The Swamp Gospel, Chuckwagon Experience, Lazy Stalkers at the Double Down, Saturday Sept, 12, 2015

Yes, my band, the Swamp Gospel played this show and it was another fun time at the Double Down Saloon. We saved some souls, drank some strychnine, and even had a topless dancer! Thank you Nikki and Charles for the pix!

(Swamp Gospel photos by Niukki Ruffling)

(Swamp Gospel topless dancer photos by Charles Woods)

Gotta admit, there has to be something to be said for someone who is not afraid to loudly and proudly proclaim in front of a bar full of people that he is a complete and total moronic (though reasonably good-natured) ass. Of course, his equally drunken friends kept egging him on, so this was probably not the first time. Did give us something to play off of, though, and I did try to exorcise his demons - unfortunately, it did not work.

Following the Gospel was the Chuckwagon Experience, featuring Paul French, ex-of my old buddies Tiger Sex, on guitar. By the large equipment and dress style, I thought we were going to be in for a set of punk/metal, and there was an element of that, but was pleasantly surprised by their set of mostly surf-oriented instrumentals. Dick Dale, Link Wray and more were covered and there were equally compelling originals. The guitar sound was occasionally a bit metallic (kinda like Agent Orange would do), but the playing was all exceptional and the show was cool'n'fun. Worth seeing, fer shure!

The Lazy Stalkers are a female-led punk rock trio of damn nice people and fine players who got the crowd up and dancin' with their frantic rock'n'roll, but I'm afraid by this time, I had imbibed in a bit of Ass Juice and quite a bit of strychnine, and did not take notes, so I can't give more details of their set, other than it was a good time!

As always, thanks to the Double Down for a diverse night of good time rock'n'roll!

Crawlspace - Blink Once For Yes

It has taken me months to get tho this, because how does one describe the rantings'n'ravings of fellow Gizmos Eddie Flowers' experimental, spontaneously improvised, cosmic rock'n'roll band, Crawlspace? Here, in various incarnations and various locations, Eddie does his best to discorporate with the help of Joe Dean and Todd Homer on bass, Bob Lee and John Collinson on drums/percussion and a plethora of guitarists: Grady Runyan, Greg Hajic, Jonathan Hall, Richard Jones, Alex Gray and Mark McCormick - all from numerous other projects.

I'm told that all Crawlspace numbers come from impromptu jams that take form as the members see fit and as the music takes them. A perfect example is "Slaughterhouse Blues" - what started as a rockin' noise fest became a loose variation on the Doors "Roadhouse Blues", with pothead Eddie exposing that he got himself a bong, not a beer in the morning! Looser, less rockin' and more turbulent is "In Your House", a bit of horror movie soundtrack-styled madness that moves into the frantic wildness of "Fifteenth Cup Off The Same Old Teabag", a short instrumental that races through the dark and ends suddenly. Next up is "We Are Crawlspace", a bit of a spaced-out theme song/explanation of the group backed by a simply riff with layers of squawk and feedback that is followed by "I Saw You on Sunset", which reminds me a bit of Pere Ubu via Modern Dance with Eddie's glossolalia over a pulsating, feedback drenched rhythm - pretty terrific interaction between 2 guitars (Jonathan and Richard) and the two percussionists.

A very demented take on "Hot Rod Lincoln", "Hot Rod Race" is musically a bit more organized than much of Crawlspaces material, but only to a point as even it goes sliding off into the void, simnply held together by Bob Lee's smash'n'crash drumming. Also seemingly a bit more structured is the cool, slow slither of "Blip on the Radar", a bluesly groove that reminds me of something that I just can't put my finger on...Another short bit of crazed cacophony appears in "Sixteenth Cup Off The Same Old Teabag" before we get somewhat funky in "Meanwhile...", another mix of 2 guitars and 2 drums/percussionists - really dig this line-up a lot - they work together well and give a full background for Eddie's stream of consciousness ravings. The CD concludes with a tumultuous take on the Dell Vetts "Last Time Around", with fuzz guitar rhythms and layers of intertwining leads and vibrato'd commotion.

If you dig a bit of dementia and challenge to your rock'n'roll, definitely find this or any of the multiple releases that Crawlspace has done since the early 80's!

Roy Brown Greatest Hits Rockin' at Midnight

Roy Brown was a fantastic jump blues/r'n'b singer/shouter from the 40's/early 50's with a soulful
tenor and plenty of energy, who influenced everyone from Big Joe Turner to the man, Elvis Presley, who covered Brown's "Good Rockin' Tonight". This is a basic 10-song compilation of the original's greatest hits.

Opening with his most famous number (due to Elvis), "Good Rockin' Tonight" here is a horn-driven, r'n'b/jump-blues that swings mightily! A somewhat slower bump'n'grind follows in "'Long About Midnight", a blusy number with sad'n'sultry horns that intertwine with the cool vocal line. But, Roy is back up and bouncin' in "Rockin' At Midnight", an update on "Good Rockin' Tonight" - hey, don't mess with a formula that works! "Hard Luck Blues" is a pretty classic blues and "Cadillac Baby" jumps'n'jives with plenty of danceable energy and fine singing by Brown who stretched out notes, shouts and croons throughout.

There's a fun guitar lick that reminds me of Woody Woodpecker's cackle in the groovin' "Bar Room Blues" and then an early version of sax-fueled rock'n'roll with "Boogie at Midnight" (yes, another variation on the theme) that has hand-claps, call'n'answer, wild blowin', and a swing that doesn't stop! Some cool guitar riffin' interacting with the sax in "Love Don't Love Nobody" while Brown sings'n'shouts before slowing down for the bluesy "Ain't It a Shame" before ending with a short "Letter From Home", which shows off a bit more guitar and less sax.

A great example of what was rock'n'roll before it was called "rock'n'roll". Fine, fine stuff!

The Staples Singers - Freedom Highway

The Staples Singers were a recording and performing gospel group for a number of years prior to this 1965 recording, but here - in the complete service - the Singers give an entire gospel service in honor, support and celebration of that year's historic civil rights marches. Previously released as a 12" LP, this CD expands to include the full service and all of the number and talking/preaching originally involved in the service.

Here Pops, Mavis, Yvonne and Pervis Staples are supplemented by Al Duncan on drums and Phil Upchurch on bass. The tunes are heartfelt and uplifting, from the rousing opener, "When the Saints Go Marching In", to the Hank Williams recitation, "The Funeral" (Pops doing the lead while the rest give a wonderful backing), to Marvis' showcases on "Build On That Shore" and "We Shall Overcome" - the rallying call of the civil rights movement - with plenty of audience participation.

The emotional "Freedom Highway" was written about the legendary march from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery and dedicated to the marchers and is a gospel stomper and an excellent tune. This is followed by a fine, slow, gospel/blues "What You Gonna Do?" and then Marvis stretches out for a marvelous "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", with a performance worthy of Aretha Franklin or Mahalia Jackson. Pops and the rest do a call'n'answer in a cool, bluesy "When I'm Gone" and then he begins "Help Me Jesus" with some preachin'n'recollectin' before it moves into a rollickin', rompin', clappin'n'stompin' number.

There is a bit of an intermission as the reverend passes the collection plate and the Staples hawk their latest wares before they return with a slow groover, "Jesus is All" (somewhat reminiscent of their earlier "Wish I Had Answered"). A great take on the classic "Samson and Delilah" (their latest single at the time) and then a slow ballad, "View the Holy City", some more preachin' in "Tell Heaven" that blends into another uptempo clap-along "He's All Right", that gives Mavis one more time to impress.

Absolutely terrific gospel record from masters of the field - highly recommended!

The Blue Sky Boys - Presenting

Bill and Earl Bolick were the Blue Sky boys, a country/bluegrass duets who performed up until 1951
but were convinced to reform and record this album in 1965 by members of the then-current folk revival movement. With a sounds reminiscent of the Stanley Brothers, Monroe Brothers and the Louvin Brothers, this team was never as well known, but still produced quality music with an excellent blend of harmonies - most songs are sung in harmony ala the Louvins - and instruments - guitar and mandolin, also like the Louvins.

The material here is mostly traditional songs, cuh as "Corina, Corina", "Midnight Special", "Who's Gonna Shoe Your Pretty Little Feet", Jack O'Diamonds" (pretty different from the other versions I have heard), "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" and more. "Oh Marry in Time" stands out for me as it has the line (and melody) that was later used by Simon and Garfunkel with "and then she'll be a true love of mine".

Really good stuff - there is a lot available from this duo so I will certainly be picking up more.
